Focusing on Life :: Hearts

Sally's prompt for this week's Focusing on Life hop was a call to notice the hearts that appear in our everyday lives. She asked us to pay attention to our surroundings and notice what hearts we see during our week.

I had to laugh to myself thinking of the prompt. Living in a house with two daughters means that it just isn't going to take that long before I see a heart pop up somewhere.

It hit me pretty quickly this week, actually just a couple hours after Sally's prompt. As I was ironing away for one of my youngest daughter's favorite crafts, a couple of hearts got rotated into the mix. I knew I had my photo for the week.

She loves to create with Pyssla beads from Ikea. We bought a single kit for the girls years ago, and still they love to create a piece, iron it and wait for it to cool. And then last weekend my youngest set up the ironing board and laid out all her pieces to be ironed and dogged me until I got to it. She had at least 12 various creations ready to go, one of which was a gift for a friend at school. It was an intricate piece (the shape of a girl) and the beads spilled all over the place when I picked it up to iron it. One look on my daughter's face, and I knew. I was down on the floor trying to find all those scattered beads. We did eventually get that one together and ironed, but it took nearly 5 tries before the thing held together. Sigh. She loves this craft.

While the girls have a large collection of shapes, colors and sizes ... we pulled out all the hearts to photograph for this week. I figured 10 would suffice.

  1. Very cute! I remember my kids Pyssla bead creations. I suspect Sally is correct and I am going to start paying more attention to spotting hearts this week. I quite often see them on trees and have blogged about this before.

  6. Those are fun. My daughter loves those beads as well. She has so much fun with them. I love that first photo. It almost looks like it is sitting in a frame.

  7. Awww...very cute creations. I have two girls, too, so there was a lot of similar crafting going on when they were younger. I should look around and see if I can spot some hearts. It'll be fun to do!

  10. I never heard of Pyssla beads before. I guess I will have to go to Ikea more often. *smile* Sounds like a fun craft for kids. I'm glad you finally got her piece to stay together.

  15. Love those hearts she created. I have never heard of Pyssla beads (going to have to look into them for my niece). You are a good mom finding those beads that dropped and getting them to put together!

  16. What lovely hearts! I think the "I heart you" is my fave though :) And now I'm going to have to check out Pyssla beads, my daughter would love them too, I think!

  17. I can see how girls would love that craft - such pretty hearts they made. I can picture the spilt beads episode and desperation to get it back together. You did well to persevere!

  20. Cynthia, these are lovely hearts - and not only for girls :) My son loves to work with those little beads too, we had a similar accident with them spilling nicely on the floor... everyone survived. The heart he made last year, I believe, was a Christmas ornament for his teacher - and stupidly enough I didn't take a picture of it!

  21. At first glance, I thought the picture was of a needlepoint canvas - this is so cute! I have never heard of this craft! You are such a good mom! :)

  22. Ah yes, I too remember these beads from my daughter, most of which became hearts as well and last year I bought a big container of all the colors for my granddaughter to start experimenting with, so the appeal is timeless!

  24. I'd never heard of Pyssla beads before either! Following the link to IKEA, they make them sound like they're regular stringing beads. I take it they melt together or some such when you iron them? Very cool.

  37. I remember doing those as a kid and then teaching my nieces how to do them as well. We called them 'fuse beads'. What an awesome subject.
