Focusing on Life :: Snowdrops

Sally's prompt this week for Focusing on Life was to photograph the beauty of flowers. I love the quote she gave us; "earth laughs in flowers" (Ralph Waldo Emerson). What a nice thought.

The problem for me is that getting a picture of flowers this time of year can be a challenge. This week I'm sharing pictures of my snowdrops from the yard ... the pictures I took last year. I know they are there waiting to come up, along with the crocus. Just not quite yet.

Last week winter came in one night: Blizzard Nemo (when did they start naming snow storms?). We got 3 feet of snow, and could not even push open the front door to get out of the house. Really. Check out the first picture (right). That is our front door and steps. We had to find an alternate escape.

You can see that absolutely everything is buried in snow... the porch lights, the bird house, the swings and slide. Even a hook for flowers (once they arrive) was filled with snow; how did it stay on a hook like that? That last picture would be what you can see of my car in the driveway from the upstairs window. My husband was standing at the escape hatch (our sliding doors in the back) yelling, "ok, everyone grab a shovel!"

I do love flowers; we've got them planted all over the yard so that new blooms come in each month. I can't wait for the first blooms of the year ... my snowdrops. That groundhog better be right; I'm ready for Spring!

  3. I love snowdrops! I would pick flowers as the prompt the week that most people in the east go some kind of snow! I think I was looking for an excuse to by the orchids! :)

  4. We've only had dustings this winter. I wouldn't mind just a little bit more snow. I won't be long before your beautiful snow drops are blooming with the promise of spring!

  5. I featured snowdrops in my post too this week, except they're actively blooming here right now.

We didn't get -any- of the other white stuff this year. Which makes me a little sad, though I'd rather none than Nemo! Your snow pictures are great!

  11. I think it was actually this year they started to name the winter storms... but I could be wrong. The snowdrops sure look like they will be a welcome sight. I'm accustom to snow like that, but them, our city has the equipment to handle it so it's not to much trouble :)

  14. Wow! Nemo got you but good didn't he?! Love your winter photos and those of the beautiful snowdrops that will be out before you know it! I too am ready for Spring, although I'm thinking that groundhog may have some explaining to do ...

  15. i think we've had the same troubles this week!! but the snowdrops always come through :)

  16. I'd rather they not name blizzards, someone's got too much time on their hands I guess.

Your birdhouse and light look like custard cones. I hope the groundhog is correct for a change.

I don't like saying this, but it's been snowing for hours, lightly, but still...

  21. Very pretty snowdrops. I also am covered with snow but I found the answer a metal flower so I can have a flower to look at even in the snow.

  23. Snow drops!! I **love** them. This year I will take pictures of the snowdrops when they come out :)

Snow drops bring so many childhood memories: they are the equivalent of being a child. It was the first flower we would see (around this time of the year, as spring would dutifully come around March 1st) and I would pick them up from the forest or buy them from the flower gypsies at the market and bring them to my mom. She would fill every single little vase or jar with them and spread the spring around the house.

You had some serious snow there :) Love all your pictures, Cynthia - they're so lovely!

  30. Snowdrops are such lovely flowers.

I think they started naming them last year - they decided that winter storms were becoming as devastating as hurricanes and therefore the stronger ones would be named.

  31. Your snowdrops are awesome!! I'm really loving your snow pics though - thosea are just as pretty!!

  32. There is a more sinister reason behind the naming of the winter storms, the insurance companies. there is a clause in some insurance companies' coverage that limits what they have to cover if the damage is the result of a named storm. Nice huh? Love the snow drop flowers, hope you have shoveled out by now!

  35. Your snowdrops are so pretty. I hope you'll be seeing them real soon this year. And then you'll now spring is on her way. And wow! that was some snowfall!

  36. Snowdrops are such a courageous flower and so lovely. I am pretty used to snowfalls like that but I imagine it is horrible when you aren't!

  37. Oh dear...no wonder you were exhausted after all that shovelling! The snowdrops are very pretty :) No early spring flowers sighting here yet.

  38. I don't recall them ever naming snowstorms before either. They were always "the blizzard of ~insert year~". Your snowdrops are so pretty! Spring cannot come early enough for me!

  39. I'm with you. I was buried under the blizzard when I received the prompt from Sally. It was a precious little gift to receive the prompt and look through my photos from last summer...it reminded me of the treasures hidden, patiently waiting to bloom again.

  40. Brrrr! Your pictures make me thankful that I live in the deep South. At least until the heat of summer arrives. . .

I hope you stay warm and that the little varmint was right with his prediction!

  41. Why did they give a cute name to such a massive storm?! I do not recall blizzards having names before either. I got lucky. Although there was 3 feet of snow in my area too, it was super windy. The wind somehow kept the snow away from my door! Your pictures looks so pretty. The wind kept all the snow off the trees for us. Even roofs ended up with very little snow on them (which is a good thing)!!!! I am glad you guys survived!

  42. Beautiful flower photo! That is a lot of snow, I hope you were able to dig out and get back to your everyday life.

  43. That is a really lovely photo! I am sure they will once again be just as beautiful this year. I am still waiting for a serious snow storm to hit northern Virginia. Most likely won't happen though. I guess I'll just wish for Spring to arrive sooner!

  44. I love this post! all those snowy photos! What an amazing amount of snow!
Where friends live near Lake Tahoe in California, all the houses are built on top of garages; the first floor is really the second floor. They could ski out their back door!
Snowdrops are wonderful! I have a patch by my front door.
