Do Overs :: Freeform Peyote

A couple months back, Karen and Mandi challenged a few of us to a free form peyote hop. I think this is one of the stitches that I've been most scared to try, but glad I finally did. For so many reasons.

Not only is it fun (can you believe I'm saying that about a stitch I was so frightened of?) but it has opened a door for me.

I've been experimenting with all kinds of new stitches. And not getting so worked up if it isn't perfect, or the tension is a little off. Doesn't mean I don't need practice, but sometimes being too much of a perfectionist gets in the way of learning new things. So for that, I want to thank Karen and Mandi for getting me outside my comfort zone!

So take 2 of this bracelet was more of what I had in mind when I started this project. I wanted something that had the flow of water to it, that felt like tide pools and surf with the treasures you find when you go hunting for shells. It is by no means perfect, but then I'm not sure that freeform peyote is meant to be?

  1. Both versions are pretty, but I can see your intention with Take 2. Perfectionism can stop all progress- clog up, shut down, put the blinders on kind of growing. Congrats for having fun with this. ♥

  2. Oh I like this Cynthia...and perfection is over-rated. Oftentimes it is what others call imperfections which give things (and people) their greatest charm.

  3. These definitely feel like "surf and sand" to me. Makes me long for the beach! I love how you keep challenging yourself and aren't afraid to step outside your comfort zone :)

  4. i thought the first was pretty darn good but the do-over is even better! i really like the while line running through the center...it is like an anchor for the rest of it. very surf, sand, beach, treasure hunting :-)

  9. As a full blown perfectionist the thought of free form gives me the eebie jeebies but it turned out beautiful! Glad you're reformed!

  10. As someone who creates pieces that have an element of conformity and structure - I love the freedom of this design, beautifully done!

  11. You know, I liked Take 1 when you first did it, but I really love how Take 2 has a less blocky and more flowy feel to it. The color blending shows that you're feeling more comfortable with freeform. Can't wait to see what comes off the worktable next!

  13. All we ever see is an artists greatest work. We never saw them mess up or get mad and toss something. Practice makes perfect, they look good, you did well. Challenges are good for us. xo

  14. I love these Cynthia! The flow of water is definitely noticeable as your inspiration! I would not think freeform is supposed to be perfect either.

  15. I have always been attracted to free-form peyote but have not gotten up the courage to try it yet. I think I am too structured after making all those beaded flowers to just let loose, LOL! Maybe one day!
