The End of Summer :: From the Dock

Each year we spend a few wonderful weeks up at a lake in the northern part of the Adirondacks. Its a place to get away, and a place to relax.

We were up over the holiday this past weekend for our annual closing of camp. Our little cabin on the lake is a summer house with no insulation which means we only spend warm weather months there.

So in the winter we board it up and wait for next year. I'm always sad when we go up to close, but we had an absolutely glorious day on Saturday and enjoyed every last minute out on the porch until the sun set.

By Sunday morning the rains had set in as we got busy with all the various tasks it takes to close up the camp. We did get out for a couple of great pictures before the rain. We had a nice showing of the local birds. My older daughter got a shot of the mergansers sitting on the end of the neighbors dock. And we heard lots of loon calls, which are my absolute favorite.

The girls got a last look at the lake before the cold sets in and the lake completely freezes over for winter. So, until next year...

What a cool lake! I've never seen a frozen lake and it's difficult for me to even imagine.

This looks like utopia in terms of peace! I'm sure the girls will carry on the tradition of spending time at the lake with their families when the time comes. :)

Your picture of the sunset, and your mention of the loons, reminds me of a favorite movie, "On Golden Pond"! Glad you had a good time and made some lovely memories! Just think, it will be Christmas before you know it!!! Time flies!

Your photos are gorgeous! What a spectacular view. It is kind of sad to close down your summer home, but it's something to look forward to for next year.

Wow, these pictures are beautiful! I'm looking into renting a cabin for a weekend in the winter. We haven't been on vacation in years and it would be nice to have our first family trip!

The Adirondacks are our favorite place too! We vacation there every summer. We spend most of our time in Inlet and Old Forge.

It does look very peaceful. Love the sunset photo, it is gorgeous.

I can imagine it would be incredibly cold up there during the winter months. Makes one wonder how people managed to survive long before the age of insulation and central heat and air
