Twisting Beads and Words

I haven't been creating much lately as my mojo seems to have been frozen under all this snow that is piling up around me. Which is strange since typically this is the time of year when I'm beading like a crazy person and making piece after piece.

But this year is a little different. I recently had a rather harsh encounter with someone in the beady community that really surprised me. She was quite demanding with her request to alter some writing I was doing, and simply would not stop until it met her approval. The accusations were of the nature that I was being careless in my opinions and potentially dangerous in my advice. That of course stopped me in my tracks as I would never want anything that I was doing to mislead someone or cause them harm. I bead because I love it, and no one should get hurt in the name of beads. In my opinion. After all, its just beads.

I was so taken aback by the aggressiveness and harsh depiction of me that I needed to walk away. If only for a bit.

I have a rather stressful day job, and often deal with abrasive people. I'm used to it, and tend to take that in stride knowing that it is part of my job to navigate issues and problems and figure out the way forward.

But my hobby is supposed to be something that relaxes me. Something to take my mind off work. So when she came at me relentlessly, I have to say I was a bit like a deer in the headlights. I needed to take a break.

Slowly I'm easing back in. But my blog has been neglected, and I apologize if I haven't been round to see your blog. I did finally finished a piece that had been on my bead table for some time. It uses a glass ribbon cab and a bit of twisted, bead braiding. Simple, relaxing and repetitious. It made me smile as it ended up looking a bit Scandinavian with all that blue and Viking-esk bead caps on the end. Thanks for those Melinda, and thanks for shoulder to lean on.

  1. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Sounds very stressful. A kinder and softer approach from this woman would have been more appropriate, in my opinion. No need to be so aggressive.

  2. I'm really sorry you had to put up with this, grrrrrrr.

Who, for the love of little green grapes, did this ridiculously censorious woman think she was? She isn't your mother, employer, or sensei...and you are a competent, intelligent, and creative adult. You giving 'dangerous' advice? Oh please! Obviously she gets her jollies from trying to steal other people's joy, I'm quite certain others would have similar tales to tell.

Erm, sorry for that... I'm glad you're beginning to get your mojo back Cynthia, your pieces are almost as beautiful as you are. Oh, speaking of which, would you mind if I pinned some of them on my Favourite Things board?

    Sending gentle hugs.

  3. Are you kidding me???? The internet (I assume this encounter you had was virtual) has become so nasty of late. People will say anything "online" - whereas they would not if they were in person. I do not understand this! Perhaps it is because I was brought up with manners, and I am a firm believer in karma...may her karma turn around and slap her silly...sooner rather than later.

Seriously...so sorry you had to partake of this...isn't there enough negativity going on this world without being catty?????

PS - Love your newest creation - as always!!

  4. What a stunning piece! The blue is beautiful and bold-perfect for these overcast days that seem to have no end. Love the cab you used as well, very unique.

Sorry to hear you had to deal with negativity. Life is too short, there is no time for that especially when it interups beading! Just know that you are surrounded by people who care and think you are swell! :)

  5. Dang. I am so sorry that you had to deal with that. I afraid I would have gotten nasty right back and blocked her afterwards. Your posts have never been anything but wonderful. I especially enjoy the ones where you weave history into your creations.

  6. It sounds like you've encountered a cyber bully. Those people should just be ignored. We live in a country of free speech after all. I feel bad for people like this and have encountered my share over the years with an online business and presence. They are not worth the stress or time when you've done nothing wrong.

On a positive note, this blue beauty is stunning! Wishing you a stress free weekend.

  7. That's too bad you had to go through that. Clearly she thought beads were more important than, well, beads. They sure aren't meant to cause stress but she didn't get that memo! Anyway, your piece is beautiful and I love the color! It's as blue as our beautiful Oregon sky this weekend! :)

  8. The world is full of all kinds of people. It's always interesting when someone reveals their true stripes. When people become unreasonable it's good to take a step back. You don't need the headache. You are a talented and kind hearted woman! Sounds like your bead colleague has a lot to learn.

The necklace is wonderful. Love the cab and the way you framed it.

  10. Cynthia, I'm sorry you experienced such a negative encounter. And you're not alone - I've been "attacked" a couple times too! Best to ignore and delete this person from your life and mind.
The necklace you created looks fit for royalty! Well...it is royal blue :)

So sorry that you encountered a rude person. I have always enjoyed your posts and don't feel that they are dangerous.
