Winter Blues Blog Hop

Liz of Bead Contagion decided that one way to fight the winter blues was to throw a blog party. She decided that her extra stash of navy blue goldstone beads would be the perfect thing to chase those blues away.

The deep color of these stones with their bit of sparkle does remind me a lot of van Gogh's Starry Night series. While I of course love the one that is so popular with the swirls in the sky, this quieter one of the bridge over the Rhone is my favorite. It has the balance of deep blue night and a touch of gold. I can almost feel the warm summer air. Almost. Boy am I done with this winter.

I am with Liz on this, this winter has had a continued oppression this year. I saw a great meme a few weeks back that went something like this ... "Is it just me, or does anyone else think we're stuck in a snow globe & some jerk keeps giving it a shake?!"

Yep. That pretty much sums it up for me. It just kept snowing, and snowing and snowing this year. In fact I woke up to snow yet again this morning.

Liz sent quite a large stash of these deep blue beads. Not only did she send a large doughnut, and several small ones, she also sent some beautiful small rounds. So after finishing the necklace I decided to also make a bracelet, but this time with a touch of silver. Blue goes so well with either metal!

Liz certainly did chase the blues away, and now I can't wait to see what everyone else created. Check out all the other bloggers: Liz (our host), Therese, Bobbie, Christine, Amy, Jasvanti, JoJo

  1. I need a vacation somewhere warm; drinks with tacky little parasols absolutely required.

Until that time, this piece certainly made me smile and drop my ax! (Joking, of course.)

  2. Hi Cynthia,
Love your blue gold stone creations! The necklace is so beautiful and I love the way you used a metal dragonfly to hold the large blue gold stone doughnut. It is like a dream for spring (it is coming I promise). The bracelet is so pretty with the silver that makes the blue gold stone pop. I like that Van Gough painting more then the one with all the swirls too, it is so much more peaceful and serine.

  3. Beautifully done. I love the dragonfly and that's also my preferred starry sky Van Gogh Pic.

I was just noticing your info...you and I seem to have traveled similar paths. I'm from Massachusetts but lived in San Francisco and Marin for 10 years, then in Western WA for 12 before moving back to the Cape Cod area in 2011. I sure miss PNW winters....this one here was the worst.

  4. WOW!!! I am blown away with your use of the dragonfly hugging the large donut. (Also - I have a rather large dragonfly tattoo so I am partial to those insects!). Your bracelet is pretty too but I am really drooling over your necklace!!

  6. Love how the the dragonfly and chain bring out the rich gold sparkles in that midnight blue. And how the placement of the linear elements so artfully balances out the circles. Love this necklace. And is there anything more wearable than a new navy-and-silver bracelet for Spring?

  7. Hi Cynthia!
I love how you show that deep blue goes well with both silver and gold. The crispness of the silver looks so different from the radiance of the gold. Both pieces are gorgeous! That dragonfly has me captivated. Wearing that necklace and rubbing your fingers over it, you could almost bring it to life just to watch it fly away. Thank you Cynthia, I always find inspiration from you!

  8. That has always been on of my favorite van Gogh's. The reflection of the lights elongated on the water just does it for me :-) And you really captured those lights beautifully in this necklace. What a stunning and beautiful, wearable necklace!!! Seeing it in person and touching it ~ it really does have flow and magic about it :-) Love the bracelet too, with its hem and silver accents!

  9. This is so elegant - the gold makes the blue goldstone pop ever more! The perfect metal to use! Beautiful!

Well, we have no snow here, but man is it cold and windy! Hope it warms up for you soon!

  10. Totally see the inspiration, Cynthia. I love the dragon fly over the donut - makes a great focal. One of my favorite combos is the navy blue and white/silver and I like the way you sectioned off the beads instead of going one long string. Pretty!

  11. Van Gogh immediately came to my mind, too, but I was just not creative enough to pull it off - I certainly didn't have anything in mind as lovely as what you made! The dragonfly is the perfect touch to make the necklace channel a warm summer night, and that's a welcome thing to imagine while the snow lingers...

  12. Pretty designs! The Blue gold stone works so beautifully with both silver and gold accents. I never thought of its analogy with van Gogh's Starry Night series. I definitely see that now! Funny meme. We had the snow today too. It is still flurrying but luckily its not sticking!

  19. While I usually prefer silver, the deep blue and gold really pair well! Your piece really does remind me of the painting :)
