Game of Thrones :: Hop with Humblebeads

When I saw that Heather over at Humblebeads was hosting a Game of Thrones hop, I was in. In fact she had me at hello on this one.

What more can I say? It's a crazy show full of amazing costumes from another era, drama weaving across the kingdoms and plenty of plot twists. I didn't find out about the show until several seasons in. Well it isn't that I hadn't heard about it, I just hadn't watched it. But then my husband had read all the books and said 'you know, you might like this series.'  We watched one show, then two, followed by several more. It turned into a binge watching marathon until we had ran out of episodes. I've been hooked ever since. There are some real bad-ass characters in this show, and of my favorites is Danny, or Daenerys Targaryen. I'll spare you all some of the more gruesome scenes, but this innocent looking girl turns out to be anything but...
I decided to use Danny as my inspiration and went in search of some her costume designs. She wears some dramatic styles. But here's the weird thing ... I was pretty set on making a pair of earrings, and I was pretty sure I'd find some of the characters wearing earrings. But as I scrolled through page, after page in my google search I could not find a one? hmmmm. I decided instead to make a bracelet. And as I looked through Danny's costumes I realized she was a great choice as she does wear quite a lot of arm gear whether it is at the wrist or the upper arm.

She also happens to be the mother of dragons. I suppose that would sound strange if you're not a fan, but makes for a clear theme when designing with her in mind. I decided to go with a braided, black leather for the band and used a a dragon-scale, hooked closure. I added some rough cut rubies for the eyes because those babies need to glow, for sure.

And for a little bonus. I recently re-worked a dragon pendant for my niece who is very into them. We found a pin that she really liked, but preferred a necklace for her dragon. So I pulled it all apart, added a back and a bail ... then strung it through some black leather cord. It was the perfect redesign for her. And the bonus touch to my dragon post.

  1. Beautiful designs, Cynthia :) I'm sure if I had a spot open up for another series, this would be a great one!

  2. Hi Cynthia,
I have heard a lot about this series, but I have not seen a single episode. I do how ever have it on my must see list. The bracelet is perfect, from the photos of Danny it fits her to a Tee. I love the Dragon necklace and I bet your niece is thrilled with it too.

  4. The first thing I noticed were those ruby red eyes! What a cool bracelet! And the blue in that dragon necklace makes the whole pendant pop. Great work!

  5. My son got me hooked on the GOT books, and after I devoured them, I bought my husband the first two seasons on DVD (he's watched them all - I'm woefully behind). Dani's a great character, and I love that you made strong, dragon themed pieces to reflect her. The bracelet really catches my eye. Did you make the clasp from PMC, or modify a clasp you had on hand? Just curious if you've added PMC to your impressive list of skills!

  10. I am in the middle of reading the books and have watched season 1. I want to finish the books before I get much farther into the HBO series. I love both pieces, they capture the essence of the atmosphere. Those rough cut rubies really make the bracelet! Great stuff.

  11. Your Game of Thrones pieces are amazing! We binged watched it last summer but now I want to re-watch last season in anticipation of the new season. We just started watching Tudors (about Henry III) on Netflix. The costumes are also stunning on that show.

  13. Both pieces perfectly capture your inspiration! Hmm, interesting that no one is wearing earrings in the show. I didn't even think of that.

  14. Clever of you to reinvent the Dragon cameo pin and turn it into an amazing choker pendant. It's beautiful. Also love the dragon clasp bracelet.

  16. I had a little different experience. The first episode... well... there was a little too much incest for my taste and I was like, "Hmmm... I don't know." But a friend encouraged me to keep watching and once I got through that initial sister-brother-lovin' I was enchanted. Not only did I watch all the episodes, but I also read all the books, event the history of Westeros, which was interesting, but a bit dry. I even found the Egg and Dunk stories that take place in the same world, but a few hundred years prior. In any event, both of your creations are wonderful! The bracelet is perfectly reptilian. And the necklace has an elegant simplicity and the color of the cameo match the character's wardrobe spot on! Great job!
