Sally's prompt this week was to focus on color. It is hard not to think about color when it comes to food. The deeper the color, the richer the flavor, the brighter the color the fresher the flavor. Or at least in my opinion.
One of my favorite salads is Caprese. Nothing tastes more like summer to me than fresh flavors. And what an amazing combination with fresh picked basil and tomatoes with locally made buffalo mozzarella. We have a local dairy that makes their own mozzarella, and it is wonderful. I slice up the tomato and cheese and break off fresh leaves of basil. You can smell the salad from across the room.
Last year I bought basil and made it through about half the bunch. And put the left over in a glass with water for about 2 weeks. Those stocks sprouted roots and I planted them in the backyard and had fresh basil from that one batch for the rest of the summer! YUM!

I like the colors and what you used to show them! Fresh tomatoes with herbs are a favorite snack in our house.
ReplyDeletemy FAVORITE summertime lunch!!! we get the basil and the tomatoes from the garden and a few friends are trying to convince me that it is easy to make moz. should i try it?!
ReplyDeleteI love your colors here~it screams summer and good eatin' :-D
Gosh, that looks awesome. And who could say no to mozzarella, really?
ReplyDeletethat salad looks delis -- my favorite too :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the tomatoes just so I can have that salad.
ReplyDeleteI also love a grape tomato, a piece of fresh mozzarella and basil leaf on a toothpick with a garlic olive oil for dipping. Mmmmm.
Thanks. Now I'm hungry
Oh, that looks soooo good and just screams summer! We get homemade mozzarella at the farmers market and it is delicious.
ReplyDeleteI can smell it from across the land, forget about the room! It is delicious - and the perfect yin/yang combination (vivid red/green, with a splash of neutral white).
ReplyDeleteThis feels like the oddest thing to be craving at this time of night but oh man does that look gooooood!
ReplyDeleteYum-O! So ready to hit the Farmer's Market for some fresh greens. Your Caprese salad looks SO delish.
ReplyDeletethis is one of my favourite foods - mozzerella, tomato and basil - 100% tastier if it's locally, or home, grown! and, of course, delicious colours :)
ReplyDeletehappy saturday and have a wonderful week!
no. 14
So are you telling me that your basil is already growing or did you cheat and use a picture you took last summer? THat salad does look yummy... although the wine glass is distressingly empty!
ReplyDeleteNow I like that color combination, yummo!
ReplyDeleteMost food seems tastier if it looks beautiful. Wonderful colors, textures and tastes!
ReplyDeleteMmmm...that looks so good! And mozzarella cheese, too? Heavenly!
ReplyDeleteYes, that looks good and its only 6 a.m. here. great shot and subject.
ReplyDeleteGoprgeous and delicious. The best possible combo!!
ReplyDeleteAhhh...fresh food! Nothing tastes as good as fresh from the garden food. I am an avid Food Network groupie and I have heard it say that we eat with our eyes first! How beautiful your salad is! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture, the tomatoes and basil look so fresh and tasty, and contrast nicely with the mozzarella.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like pure heaven to me! Can you tell I'm Italian? LOL. Anyway, I did not realize you can sprout the basil you buy in the store. May just have to try this!
ReplyDeleteHow clever! I never would've thought to see if the leftovers would sprout!
ReplyDeleteLove that you went to food, because visually it can be so appealing... caprese salad makes my mouth water!
Hi Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteI have never had that type of salad I think I will give it a try, it looks delicious and very colorful.

I love caprese salads. Part of the reason is the wonderful colors in the tomatoes and basil. Great choice for this week.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a yummy salad!! And your colors are fantastic in it! I am thinking of trying what you mentioned with the basil,...would love to have some fresh basil in my yard, but I may have to wait until after summer - it's too darn hot here in the desert for anything but prickly cactus for the next 6 months!!
ReplyDeleteLooking tasty! I'd run out to the grocery store after seeing thing, but I haven't noticed any tomatoes that look half that good.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful color combination. Living in a small town we don't have access to such things as the mozzerella. It looks heavenly!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favs! I don't think there's anything more fresh looking or tasting than a green, white and red salad! Perfect colors and flavors. Here in Israel fresh mint is a common ingredient in fresh salads, with tomato. I have a recipe or two on my blog you might like to try. Happy eating!!
ReplyDeleteWine and salad look good together ;)
ReplyDeleteI can almost smell that basil!
That looks yummy! I've never had that kind of salad before so need to find out how to make it!
ReplyDeleteYummy colors! Makes me hungry.
ReplyDeleteI love this salad! We have it for dinner during the warmer months with some fresh garlic bread. Makes me want some NOW :)
ReplyDeleteSmart choice. Food offers endless possibilities for color. Your salad looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteYou captured a lovely sight but I can imagine that it smells just as great. Great looking salad and with wine....yum!
ReplyDeleteMmmm! Caprese is a beautiful source of rich red and green. It is one of my favorites too and so easy to whip up! So perfect with wine and good company. Very cool about growing that basil last year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great use of color! That is my favorite, favorite summer salad!
ReplyDeleteMy mouth is watering! I have to try to sprout some basil! Thanks for sharing that! Have a great one ;o)
ReplyDeleteI love blue plates like that - they show off the food so well. Yes I can smell that basil from here in Ca!
ReplyDeleteYum, great photo I love caprese salad too!!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors, smells, and flavor of a caprese salad! It is truly one of my favorites. Great photo.

You are making me so hungry! I love caprese salad. I also like to do an appetizer caprese. Cherry tomato, a sprig of basil, and a mozzarella ball poked with a toothpick and you have the perfect bite sized caprese salad!
