Focusing on Life :: Centerpiece

I've had a lot going on lately and haven't been able to get out and snap pics for Sally's hop. I am hoping to catch up today since I took the day off to celebrate my youngest daughter's birthday.

Sally asked us 3 weeks ago to focus on an industrial photo. I confess that I had some trouble trying to think about how to capture that in a photo. Yes I work in New York, but a single photo? When I think of industry it makes me think of the turn of the last century when machines made life easier, which made me think of the old sewing machines. I learned how to sew on an old Singer with the crank wheel. And when I bought my first machine I wanted one just like it, so I bought this one. It only goes backwards and forwards. Nothing fancy, but it is what I prefer.

The next thing Sally asked us to think about was to reflect. This time of year I do reflect on all the things to organize as the kids go back to school, the days become shorter, and the rains come --- soon to be snow. I actually enjoy the cooler weather, and don't mind the rain. But that is probably because I grew up in the Pacific Northwest.

Ok, so one more photo to share with you all. Today is my youngest's birthday, and my centerpiece. She is very excited as we are having several of her friends over for pizza, cake and then off to the opening night of the Hunger Games. It just happened to coincide with her exact birthday. She's just a tad giddy today as she awaits the arrival of all her friends showing up to help her celebrate. So I might be a little delayed in getting around to everyone's blog posts tonight!

  1. Oh MY, I love that sewing machine. It looks JUST like the one I learned on as well...ours was a treadle, though. So easy and comforting to use, but putting the bobbin in was a B!!
    Happy Birthday to your daughter! Hope you all have a great time at the movie.

  3. Love these pics, Cynthia. Whenever I see one of those beautiful sewing machines, I imagine what it would have been like to go from doing EVERYTHING by hand, to having a machine to speedily do it for you. Hmmm... seems the antithesis of what we look for when making "handmade", strangely. :)

  4. That is a beautiful photo of your daughter; what a pretty girl she is! Happy birthday to her. Great choice for a movie. I plan to go see the new Hunger Games film with my daughter next week. We've both read all three books, and have seen the first film. Looking forward to part two in the theater.

    Hope you all have a wonderful time!

  11. I do love your sewing machine. Looks like the one we rescued in the dump up at the cabin after the fire a few years back - only yours is much more shiny. I also love the water droplets on the leaf - wow. And your daughter - how beautiful! Kids really are the 'centerpiece' aren't they? I hope she has a lovely day w/her friends and at the movie (Logan says it's pretty good!).

    And great photos for the other prompts as well. My mom had one of these sewing machines as decoration when I lived at home.

  13. Happy Birthday to your daughter! She's beautiful. Oh the fun she's going to have! Love your sewing machine. I have a fancy one I don't use, but I still want it. Reminds me of my Mom and Grandmom and all the fun they had on theirs through the years.

  19. The sewing machine reminds me of my mom's. She has an old Singer that folds out from underneath its cabinet. They don't make things like that anymore that last forever! Happy birthday to your daughter! Pizza and Hunger Games sounds like the most perfect way to spend it. :)
